Loan Application Process

Award Letter

Students who have completed their Financial Aid Application and all other required forms will receive a Financial Aid Award Packet. The Award Packet includes your award letter and information on how to complete the loan application process. Please check with the Financial Aid Office for the status of your application.

The following forms must be returned to the Financial Aid Office by the date indicated on the award letter:

  1. Award Letter — Return one copy of the signed award letter. The award letter shows the cost of attendance or budget, the loan period and the type of financial aid you are being offered. If you wish to decline or reduce an award, cross out the total amount and write in the amount you wish to accept. For more information, see Understanding your Award Letter (PDF)
  2. Loan Request Form(s) — Please complete and submit to the Financial Aid Office the appropriate loan request forms based on the loans you have accepted on your award letter. Students have the option of applying for Federal GradPLUS or private/alternative loans to pay for the shortfall and/or living expenses. Please review Comparison of GradPLUS vs Private Loans (PDF) before you make a decision.

Student Account Authorization Form (PDF) - Please download form and return it to the financial aid office along with the rest of your documents.

Selecting a Lender

Although it is more convenient for students to have the same lender for the different types of student loans, students are not required to have the same lender.

Choosing a lender is an important part of applying for the federal student loans: Stafford and GradPLUS. Students are free to choose any lender authorized by the Department of Education to provide these loans. Each year, regulatory changes and market conditions impact individual lenders' loan terms. To help students and families make informed choices, the Financial Aid Office has developed a lender list covering Stafford, Graduate PLUS and private loans. Please go to ELMSelect for the list of lenders.

This site is managed by the Financial Aid Office and contains information that will help you compare lender benefits and their products. Lenders were invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their loan products. From those who responded, a systemic and equitable method for selecting the top lenders was held. These lenders had to meet a stringent standard of requirements that included, but were not limited to, competitive borrower benefits; lender stability; efficient loan servicing; online support and tools; and customer service.

New Borrowers — It is important for first-time borrowers to review lender information before making their selection. Please review Things to Consider when Selecting a Lender (PDF) before you make your decision.

Continuing Borrowers — It is recommended that continuing borrowers continue to borrow from the same lender to make your repayment process less complicated. If you choose to change your lender, it is important to understand the impact of having multiple lenders. Please stop by the Financial Aid Office to discuss this further.

Financial Aid Entrance Interview

Students receiving financial aid for the first time at University of the Pacific, Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry must complete a Federal Student Loan Entrance counseling session. The entrance counseling will review terms and conditions of student loans, debt management, budgeting, rights and responsibilities and various other aspects of student loans. The entrance counseling must be completed online. Please see the Entrance Interview Requirement section on our website for more information. NOTE: Financial aid funds will not be released until this requirement is fulfilled.

Students who are borrowing less than the amount of their direct educational expenses will need to set up a payment plan for the balance. Please contact the Financial Aid Office staff for instructions or Duke Dahlin in the Business Office at 415.929.6651 for assistance in setting up a payment plan.

After you return your award letter accepting your student loans, the Financial Aid Office will prepare your Living Expense Worksheet which will show a breakdown of the school charges by quarter and the financial aid accepted. The intent of this worksheet is to illustrate the estimated quarterly living expense check you will receive for the three quarters included in your loan period. For additional information see Monthly Living Costs/Budget Planning — Managing Costs During Dental School (PDF).
