IDS Admission Requirements

The International Dental Studies (IDS) program is one of a small number of dental programs dedicated to training graduates of foreign dental schools to practice dentistry in the United States. We welcome applicants from around the globe. To ensure that your application receives proper attention, please read the following information carefully.

Admission Requirements

Applicants who wish to be considered for the July 2010 incoming class must submit all application documents to the IDS Office by 1:00 p.m. (Pacific Time) on August 14, 2009. Please be aware that if any document is missing as of the deadline time and date, the application will be regarded as incomplete and cannot be considered.

The applicant is responsible for providing all of the following:

  1. Completed Application Form
    Submit a completed, typewritten application form signed and dated by the individual applying to the program.
    (Any changes made to the form will make your application null and void.)
  2. Application Fee
    Remit a non-refundable application fee of $75 (USD) in the form of a personal check, cashiers check or money order, payable to: University of the Pacific.
    (This fee is non-refundable and will not apply toward any tuition. This fee is subject to change.)
  3. Dental Experience
    Submit your Dental Experience with all information (educational, work/volunteer experience, academics, awards and honors) in a curriculum vitae (CV) format. See the sample CV in the admission packet.
    (Do not submit any personal, school or dental certificates. This information should be provided under the Awards and Honors heading in the CV.)
  4. Dental Goals
    Provide your typewritten dental goals/statement on one-page (maximum) using a one-inch margin on all sides and 12-point type.
  5. Letters of Recommendation
    Submit a minimum of two actual notarized or original official letters of recommendation (in English) dated from June 2008 to present. Address the letters of recommendation to the IDS Admissions Committee. Letters in a language other than English must be accompanied by an original notarized translation by a bona fide U.S. translator. A maximum of four letters can be submitted.
    If you have been out of dental school for less than two years, letters should be from the dean and/or faculty.
    If you have been out of dental school for more than two years, letters from international or U.S. dental professionals with whom you have worked are required.
  6. National Board Dental Examination — Part 1 (NB-1)
    Submit actual notarized or original official NB-1 examination result, with the comprehensive score of 80 or above (there is no sectional scores to be considered). Examination result earned prior to 2007 requires the average score of 80 or above AND all four test score scores with a minimum of 75 or above. A score below the minimum will not be considered.
  7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    Submit actual notarized or original official TOEFL result earned from January 2007 to present. A minimum score of 92 or above (internet-based version), 580 or above (paper-based version) is required. A score below the minimum will not be considered.
    4892 is the TOEFL institution code for the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. Please include this code on your examination entrance ticket to request test results be sent directly to the school. (There is no department code for the dental school.)
    Although the minimum TOEFL score is met, an English proficiency examination may be administered at the School of Dentistry on the interview day.
    (The TOEFL requirement will not be waived.)
  8. Dental Degree
    Submit actual notarized document of the BDS, DDS, DMD, Odontology, Stomatology or comparable degree with the application. Any degree in a language other than English must be accompanied by an original notarized translation from a bona fide U.S. translator. This program does not accept provisional dental degrees.
    (Do not submit the official degree document since the dental school is not responsible for any loss or damage.) 
  9. ECE Course-By-Course Evaluation
    Submit actual notarized or original official ECE course-by-course evaluation. A minimum U.S. GPA of 2.00 or above is required.
    (Do not submit any transcripts, statement of marks or course curriculum.)

Notes

Actual notarized document: a photocopy of the official document bearing the actual, original notary stamp

Original official document: a document sent from the source (dental school, ADA, ECE, ETS or dental professionals) to the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry directly, OR a document provided to you by the source in a sealed envelope.

Photocopies without the actual, original notary stamp will not be accepted as official documentation.
