Clinical Research on New Dental Products

Dr. Lisa Harpenau

I am interested in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. My research pursuits include testing of dental products such as plaque control devices, oral chemotherapy, and lasers.

In earlier research projects I have investigated the use of cyclosporine for the treatment of oral erosive lichen planus, powered toothbrush effectiveness on plaque reduction and gingival bleeding, a new manual toothbrush on plaque removal, the effects of nutritional supplementation on periodontal disease, periodontal debridement and surgery with/without a time-release antimicrobial (minocycline) on periodontal disease, and debridement with/without diode laser curettage in treating periodontitis. It is anticipated that we will continue further clinical study involving laser application in the treatment of periodontitis.

In addition to research, I am the primary editor for the fifth edition of Hall's Critical Decisions in Periodontology with a publication date of spring 2012 (PMPH-USA Global Medical Publishing; Shelton, CT).
