Oral cancer is a condition that kills more people in the US annually than cervical cancer or melanoma. Dr. Carpenter will present an overview of the epidemiology of oral cancer, emphasizing the facts towards prevention that include discontinuing and avoiding several known risk factors and early detection. The various appearances of several potentially cancerous and early cancerous lesions will be presented and several techniques to determine whether further treatment is necessary will be discussed. In addition, the hygienist’s role in handling patients’ complications following treatment will be reviewed.
