The Northern California Section of the American College of Dentists (ACD) recently honored three members of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry community at the ACD's annual awards banquet on May 22 in Burlingame, Calif.

Jennifer Fountain, DDS '10, was honored with the Outstanding Student Leader award. Her award recognizes a student at the Dugoni School of Dentistry who has shown high achievement in academia as well as superior leadership abilities. Fountain has held several student government roles at the school, including Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) president.

Dr. David Nielsen received a Distinguished Faculty Member award in recognition of outstanding service to the school and extraordinary dedication to dental education. In addition to a variety of leadership positions held at the dental school throughout the past 30 years, he currently serves as assistant dean for International Programs and Alumni Affairs, and executive director of the school's Alumni Association. Nielsen himself is a graduate of the dental school's Class of 1967.

Finally, decades of accomplishment were recognized when Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni was brought to the podium in advance of his upcoming national Lifetime Achievement Award. An awards plaque was presented by Dr. Steven Chan, a regent for the 7th Regency of ACD which includes California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico. A heartfelt presentation followed, providing a retrospective of Dugoni's impact on a wide variety of organizations including the California Dental Association, the American Dental Association, FDI World Dental Association, Dentsply and, of course, the Dugoni School of Dentistry. Dugoni is currently president of the ADA Foundation, where he is involved in leading a billion dollar campaign for dental education.

This October, Dr. Dugoni will be officially presented a national Lifetime Achievement Award at the ACD Convocation in Orlando, in celebration of his 50 years of membership in ACD. Dugoni also was recently recognized for this upcoming achievement by the Southern California Section of ACD during a May 15th awards presentation at the California Dental Association meeting in Southern California.

"These three honorees are outstanding members of the Dugoni School of Dentistry family and have demonstrated true leadership, loyalty and commitment to excellence," said Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. "I congratulate them and thank them for their dedication and service as recognized by the American College of Dentists."

The student and faculty award winners were determined by a vote of school faculty members who are fellows of the ACD.

The event also included welcoming and closing remarks from Dr. Alan Budenz, faculty member at the Dugoni School of Dentistry, who serves as chair of the ACD Northern California Section.

Founded in 1920, the American College of Dentists is the oldest national honorary organization for dentists. The mission of ACD is to promote ethics, professionalism and service within the dental profession. Membership is by invitation only. Fellows are selected based on their contributions to organized dentistry, oral health care, dental research, dental education, the profession and society.
