Nearly 30 academic administrators and department chairs from across the country came to San Francisco this past weekend to learn techniques and expand skills needed for effective academic management.
The leaders participated in the Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program (CAAMP), a collaborative effort between the Academy for Academic Leadership and University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.
Held for the second time at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, this year's program was open to a multidisciplinary group that included dental, nursing, pharmacy, law and medical school administrators. Representatives came from several schools at University of the Pacific, and from University of New Mexico, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, University of Mississippi Medical Center, and University of New Mexico's College of Nursing, among other schools.
The event, held July 23-26, gave academic leaders skills and confidence to balance competing demands and manage diverse programs and people. CAAMP focused on academic management, including working with people, programs and resources. The program also included workshops on optimizing key relationships within the organization, as well as tips on personal and professional development. Participants discussed a wide variety of topics, including how to recruit, retain and develop faculty; conflict management techniques; managing up the administrative ladder; department budgeting; and managing legal issues in an educational environment.
Guest instructors for this highly collaborative program were Judith E. N. Albino. Ph.D.; Clyde H. Evans, Ph.D.; Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr.; N. Karl Haden, Ph.D.; Nader Nadershahi, D.D.S., M.B.A.; and Pamela Zarkowski, B.S.D.H., M.P.H., J.D.
"Congratulations to our department chairs and others involved in CAAMP for devoting a great deal of their time to developing their skills through this year's program," said Nader Nadershahi, D.D.S., M.B.A., Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. "The CAAMP program fits with our goal of actualizing individual potential among faculty, staff and students, which is an important part of our school's mission."
