Students from the graduating class of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Dental Hygiene program were recently honored during the school’s 2013 Hygiene Pinning and Awards Ceremony. The event, held April 26 on University of the Pacific’s Stockton campus, acknowledged academic achievement and clinical excellence as demonstrated by the Class of 2013.

After opening comments from Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., Dental Hygiene Program Director Deborah Horlak introduced guests, faculty and staff. Each graduating student then received a pin to symbolize their transition from academia into practice. A handful of students were also presented awards for their unique dedication to areas such as community service, leadership and patient care.

Hilary Andrade won the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award; Nikki Khalili won the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Community Outreach Award; Haley Nau won the California Dental Hygienists Association Student Leadership Award; and Tiffany Kao received a special recognition for participation in community outreach. Ronalyn Gamayo won the Colgate Oral Health Advisor STAR Award and was also recognized for having achieved highest honors and earning the position of class valedictorian.

“I am very proud of the members of our Dental Hygiene Class of 2013,” said Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. “This class has embraced the mission and values of the Dugoni School, and I am confident each graduating student will play a valuable role as members of a dental team and the dental profession.”

Following the ceremony, students and guests enjoyed a reception in the Chan Family Health Sciences Learning Center and Clinics, giving family and friends the opportunity to see where the graduates have spent time learning and treating patients in recent years.

The Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Dental Hygiene Program is the nation’s first 36-month program leading to a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene. By integrating education, experiential learning and clinical practice, students learn to work with the dentist and the dental team to treat a wide variety of patients. Details about the program are available on the program web page.
