The California Dental Association (CDA) Foundation has announced Class of 2011 student Rachelle Joy Magtanong-Madrid is a recipient of the Foundation's annual Dental Student Scholarship. Magtanong-Madrid will be awarded $5,000 toward her dental education and will be recognized at this year's Alumni-Graduate Banquet scheduled on June 10 during graduation weekend.

The Dental Student Scholarship is awarded each spring to a select handful of exceptional dental students from California dental schools. It commemorates volunteerism, as well as academic strength and good standing, high ethical standards and leadership.

Throughout her dental school career, Magtanong-Madrid has dedicated countless hours to volunteering in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. She has served as co-president of the school's Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) Program, where she coordinated and led numerous community service events. She has also been highly involved with San Francisco's Project Homeless Connect (PHC) serving as the school's PHC coordinator during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Furthermore, Magtanong-Madrid has spent time volunteering overseas at in remote locations across the globe. Most recently, she spent her week-long spring break volunteering in the Philippines.

"I'm very grateful to the CDA Foundation for this incredible scholarship. It is an honor to represent the Dugoni School, as they have given me so many wonderful opportunities and experiences," said Magtanong-Madrid. "I would also like to thank Ms. Christine Miller for her tremendous guidance and support of all my volunteer endeavors through SCOPE and PHC. Having wanted to be a dentist since I was seven, I am truly living my dream."

Magtanong- Madrid will be graduating from the Dugoni School of Dentistry in June 2011. She has plans to enter private practice and is considering a pediatric residency. Treating the underserved will remain a priority for her, she says, and she hopes to be an active leader in organized dentistry.
