The Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) honored Eve Cuny with the group's most prestigious award at its annual symposium held June 11-14 in Plano, Texas.
Cuny was honored with the James Crawford Award in recognition of her innumerable contributions to dental infection control and safety. Cuny is Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Medicine and Director of Environmental Health and Safety at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.
Recipients of this award have made major contributions in science, education or public policy related to OSAP's core competencies of dental infection control, office safety and occupational health. This award, named in honor of one of the founding fathers of dental infection control, recognizes lifetime achievement in the field. OSAP is a group of dental practitioners, allied healthcare workers, industry representatives and other interested persons with a collective mission to promote infection control and related science-based health and safety policies and practices.
At the awards ceremony, Cuny received a letter of commendation from Dr. Augustine P. Maniga, the United Republic of Tanzania's Ambassador to the United Nations.
Cuny recently spent time in Tanzania on behalf of Miracle Corners of the World, a group that worked to educate healthcare staff and equip the dental school at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam. Cuny was part of a team that helped assess the needs of the dental school, and she continues to work to train a new generation of doctors and dentists about infection control and safety. Miracle Corners of the World is a non-profit organization that empowers youth to become positive agents of change, improve their lives and contribute to their communities. The group also provides assistance in the development of sustainable oral health care programs in Tanzania and other developing parts of the world.
"I am pleased that OSAP is recognizing Eve Cuny for her outstanding contributions to dental infection control and safety," noted Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Dean of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and one of several dental education leaders who provided comments for a commemorative booklet given to Cuny at the event. "She is an outstanding asset to the school and I am pleased to have her as one of my colleagues."
"Eve Cuny was, and is, one of the most remarkable individuals I have been privileged to work with over my career in dentistry and dental education," added Dean Emeritus Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni. "Over my twenty-eight years as dean she guided the School of Dentistry and all of its dental infection control and safety policies and made them an essential part of our teaching and learning programs. We excelled in these areas because of her leadership and commitment to excellence."
