University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry recently honored Dan Hammer, class of 2011, with the Dr. Thomas R. Bales Family Endowment Good Samaritan Award. Hammer received a plaque and a $5,000 scholarship on Jan. 9 during the dental school's annual Over the Hump Party — a celebration to recognize students for completing half of the school's Doctorate of Dental Surgery program.
School of Dentistry alumnus and benefactor Dr. Thomas R. Bales established the award in 2004 to recognize a second-year student for demonstrating exemplary kindness to fellow classmates. A committee comprised of faculty, administrators and student body officers nominated Hammer and others for the honor, and he was selected by a vote of his classmates.
"I am extremely honored by this award," said Hammer. "Pacific fosters a culture focused on community involvement — ranging from within our dental school class to the greater San Francisco area. I am grateful for all the opportunities available to help improve these communities and make a difference."
Hammer received his undergraduate degree from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. He is a representative for the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and co-founder of the student-led community involvement group Pacific Pays It Forward. Following graduation, Hammer plans to work for the U.S. Navy and hopes to be involved with dental education.
