Dental Assistants in the Spotlight during Dental Assistants Recognition Week

March  08, 2010

To coincide with Dental Assistants Recognition Week, the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is extending its thanks to the school's 24 hard-working dental assistants. Celebrated nation-wide, this special week is hosted by the American Dental Assistants Association.

Dental assistants are an integral part of any dental practice, and are key players in keeping a practice running smoothly. Assistants' duties run the gamut from working chairside with the dentist to managing the business side of the practice. At the Dugoni School of Dentistry, assistants work in nine of the school's San Francisco clinics, as well as at the school's Laguna Honda and Union City clinics. These dental assistants play a critical role in providing a seamless patient experience. Going above and beyond their call of duty, some assistants at the Dugoni School of Dentistry also teach continuing education courses several times each year.

We thank all of our dedicated dental assistants for the work they do to help the school's clinics run smoothly," said Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo Jr., dean of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. "Dental assistants play a key part in promoting oral health, educating our patients and helping our students and faculty. They are a valued and necessary component of our school."

In addition to the 24 full-time assistants employed at the school, the Dugoni School of Dentistry also provides learning opportunities to dental assistant students from a handful of Bay Area community colleges including College of San Mateo and City College of San Francisco. Students attend educational courses and assist with patients at the dental school's San Francisco clinic. This opportunity allows dental assistant students to gain hands-on experience and work closely with other dental students pursuing general dentistry or advanced degrees.
