July  03, 2012

Student and faculty volunteers from the Dental Hygiene program have been busy over the last several months participating in community health events throughout California's Central Valley. Volunteers recently took part in two opportunities to educate women and seniors about the importance of taking care of their mouths, and the impact that good oral health can have on overall health.

Each year, the San Joaquin County Office of Aging holds a Senior Awareness Day in Micke Grove Park in Lodi. This organization provides a network of programs that are designed to meet the needs of seniors and disabled adults regardless of income level. The May 31 event was the 34th annual free informational fair held for seniors, caregivers and families. Attendees enjoyed food booths, a wellness walk, health screenings, live entertainment, bingo, an antique car show and a parade. Dental hygiene students and faculty were on hand to answer hygiene questionsHygiene Outreach and provide oral health information. They passed out more than 500 toothbrushes and toothpaste, and shared information about dental services offered at the Pacific Dental Care Clinic in Stockton.

Earlier in the month, hygiene students also participated in the third annual Women's Health Fair organized by the National Community Pharmacist Association (NCPA) and University of the Pacific's Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  The free fair offered numerous screenings and services available to everyone, with a special emphasis placed on women's health issues in celebration of Mother's Day. Several hygiene students performed oral cancer exams as part of the event. The event was held May 13 on the campus of University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Members of the community interested in learning more about dental services offered at the Pacific Dental Care Clinic are invited to visit the clinic's web page. The clinic, located on University of the Pacific's main campus in Stockton, is open to the public and offers comprehensive, patient-centered oral health care to adults, children and seniors from throughout the Central Valley.
