Dental School Goes Casual during Fundraiser to Fight Breast Cancer

Students, faculty and staff show off their comfy jeans on Lee Denim Day.

October  12, 2009

On Oct. 9, University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry participated in the 14th annual Lee National Denim Day by inviting students, faculty and staff to wear their blue jeans as a sign of support for the fight against breast cancer.

For the past 11 years, the dental school's Pediatric Dentistry Clinic has organized the school's involvement in the national fundraiser. In exchange for a $5 donation, participants are given a pink ribbon pin and the opportunity to "go casual" on Denim Day. This year, the dental school raised more than $1,000 in donations as of Oct. 9, and will potentially bring in more this week; donations will be accepted through Oct. 16.

"Year after year we're thrilled with the level of support and enthusiasm people show for this fundraiser," said Magda Rinaldi, dental teaching assistant in the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic who organized the event along with dental teaching assistant Ligia Bermudez. "Participation in Denim Day shows the dental school's commitment to getting involved in fundraising efforts that improve the quality of life for others and make an impact in our communities."

"I am happy to fundraise for the organizations that benefit from Lee National Denim Day because they have helped so many men and women get the treatment they need," said Bermudez. "Also, I am always impressed by the generous people at the dental school."

Rinaldi and Bermudez have organized the school's involvement for the last three years following the footsteps of Dianne Weiner, telecommunications manager, who started the school's involvement in 1998.

The total funds raised from nationwide participation in Denim Day will support treatment research, including the development of an early detection blood test in collaboration with the Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Project. Since 1996, Lee National Denim Day has raised more than $75 million for breast cancer research.
