More than 15 students, faculty and staff dusted off their cycling gear and riding equipment for Bike to Work Day, held Thursday, May 13. The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Health and Wellness Committee sponsored the school’s participation in Bike to Work Day, an event celebrated throughout San Francisco and the United States. Bikers who cycled to the dental school were welcomed with a light breakfast before starting work or classes.
Bike to Work Day is a chance for commuters to be physically active, show support for reduced air pollutants and celebrate National Bike Month. In San Francisco, the San Francisco Bike Coalition sponsored free bike tune-ups, giveaways and stations for bikers to pick up free coffee and snacks.
The school’s recently-formed Health and Wellness Committee encouraged members of the dental school community to participate in Bike to Work Day this year as the event aligned well with the committee’s goals of promoting physical fitness, healthy habits and balanced behaviors.
"We congratulate everyone who participated in Bike to Work Day for their interest in exploring healthy, alternative ways to commute to school," said Armando Ortega, human resources representative and member of the Health and Wellness Committee. "Bike to Work day is one of several programs the committee is supporting in order to create additional healthy choices for employees and students."
