Dr. Anders Nattestad Named Director of Global Initiatives for Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has named Dr. Anders Nattestad as the school's Director of Global Initiatives, which aims to create opportunities to share knowledge and resources, and ultimately raise standards in dental education worldwide.

Nattestad will be involved in managing and reviewing the school's opportunities for global partnerships and initiatives, working closely with the Dean, administration, faculty and students. He will continue to maintain his current duties as a professor and director in the school's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Nattestad has significant experience in global issues relating to dental education. Prior to joining the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, he served as professor and head of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine. He previously held the position of chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he also earned his DDS degree, PhD and specialization in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He spent the last 10 years on the executive committee for DentEd, an extensive European Union project to harmonize dental education. For the past five years, Nattestad has served as secretary general of the Association for Dental Education in Europe. A fellow of the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute, he is also a reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education and the author of more than 40 published articles.

"For many years, I've had the experience of working with Dr. Nattestad on consultation visits to dental schools throughout Europe and Eastern Europe, and in supporting three global congresses," said Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., who himself is a global dental education leader and current president of the International Federation of Dental Education Associations (IFDEA). "Dr. Nattestad played a very important role in all these initiatives and we are pleased to welcome him to this new role. He will provide us with outstanding leadership in our global initiatives and is well respected among educators worldwide."

As part of the Global Initiatives effort, The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry regularly hosts visiting educators from dental schools around the world. This spring, the school hosted a group of educators from Sun Yat-sen University's Guanghua School of Stomatology, a top dental school in China.
