Dr. Donald Poulton to Retire

Dr. Donald PoultonDr. Donald Poulton announced he will retire from his position as orthodontic program director on Oct. 10, 2007 after 26 years of service. He will continue to lecture and serve as a clinical advisor on orthodontic topics at the dental school one day a week.

"Dr. Poulton is one of the most well known and respected orthodontists in the West Coast," said Dr. Robert Boyd, Pacific's chair of the department of orthodontics. "He has shaped the lives and careers of countless dental students and we have been fortunate to have him as part of the Pacific family."

An Oakland resident and orthodontist in Alameda County for 40 years, Poulton joined the dental school in 1981 as chair and professor of the department of orthodontics. His dedication to dental education has earned him numerous awards and citations, including the California State Society of Orthodontists' Distinguished Service Award and Pacific's Medallion of Distinction, the dental school Alumni Association's highest honor.

Poulton has held leadership positions with several professional orthodontic organizations and served as president of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and the Edward H. Angle Society of Northern California. Additionally, he was a consultant for the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation in 1981.

Poulton has authored numerous of articles on a wide variety of orthodontic topics and has made countless presentations to dental organizations nationally and internationally, in countries such as Germany, Israel, Switzerland, Italy, Korea and Singapore.

Poulton earned his DDS degree and orthodontic certificate from UCSF School of Dentistry, where he also served as chair of postdoctoral orthodontics. Shortly after completing his dental education, Poulton was appointed to the National Institute of Dental Research in Bethesda, Maryland, as an investigator in orthodontics. He operated private specialty dentistry practices in Alameda and Oakland from 1958 to 1998.
