Dr. Ed Zuckerberg Shares Advice on Using Social Media in Dentistry

Dr. Ed Zuckerberg shared tips on using social media to engage with patients.

It makes sense that the father of the founder of Facebook would be a social media expert. He also happens to be a dentist. For many years, Dr. Ed Zuckerberg, whose son is Mark Zuckerberg, has been bridging the digital and dental worlds as an early adopter of technology in the dental office.

On Saturday, July 12, he shared his insights at the latest in a series of prospective donor events led by Pacific Dugoni Foundation (PDF) President Ed Bedrossian, Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., and Jeff Rhode, Associate Dean of Development. Co-hosted by PDF board members Drs. Tom Indresano, Ken Shimizu, Gabby Thodas and Dean Emeritus Art Dugoni, 75 graduates of Orthodontics and Oral Surgery and friends attended Dr. Zuckerberg's talk followed by tours of the new dental facilities at 155 Fifth Street. Drs. Don Montano and Rob Relle also presented on "Orthognathic Surgery using Clear Aligners" to round out the continuing education session before the tours.  

ZuckerbergDuring his special presentation, Dr. Zuckerberg covered the role of social media in the dental office and painted a broad picture of trends in social media in dentistry. He also discussed creating engaging content, involving staff in content creation, crafting messages for targeted demographics, holding contests and offering discounts on social media, and much more. According to Dr. Zuckerberg, social media has many advantages over traditional patient outreach methods. Attendees left with new ideas for using social media to grow their practice and deepen their relationships with patients.  

While at Pacific Dugoni's new campus, Dr. Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Karen Zuckerberg, also had the opportunity to tour the new Simulation Lab, dental clinics and other spaces in the new facility, which officially opened on July 14 for the start of the new academic year.  

Social media lectureDr. Zuckerberg will speak about social media marketing and online reputation management at the upcoming California Dental Association's CDA Presents session in San Francisco being held from September 4 to 6. In addition to regularly lecturing nationally and internationally on technology integration and social media marketing for dentists, Dr. Zuckerberg treats patients part-time in Palo Alto, Calif.  

Technology has always been an integral part of Dr. Zuckerberg's practice. He introduced his first PC to the practice in 1986 and started using intraoral cameras in 1987, air abrasion in 1991, digital radiography in 1998 and E4D CAD/CAM dentistry in 2009. His office went completely paperless in 2005. He maintains a Facebook page with tips on promoting dental practices using social media and also maintains a separate page for his patients. Dr. Zuckerberg is a 1978 graduate of NYU College of Dentistry and owned his own practice in Dobbs Ferry, New York from 1981 to 2013.
