The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry recently began preparation for accreditation site visits for its pre-doctoral (DDS), AEGD and Orthodontics programs. The accreditation process ensures that the school's programs meet quality standards and guides the school in developing programs to meet the needs of society and the evolving practice of dentistry.
Accreditation is a non-governmental, voluntary peer review process by which educational institutions or programs may be granted public recognition for compliance with accepted standards of quality and performance. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) is the agency recognized by the United States Department of Education to accredit dental education programs.
The review involves an extensive self-study produced by the school. The process also includes a CODA accreditation review team site visit to the school planned for October 28-30, 2014.
Nearly 50 faculty and staff members are involved across 11 writing teams preparing the institution's self-study report for the pre-doctoral, AEGD, and orthodontics programs. The predoctoral group, consisting of more than 40 members, is collecting and analyzing evidence to document the school's compliance in the following areas: Institutional Effectiveness; Educational Program — Instruction, Curriculum Management, Critical Thinking and Self-Assessment; Educational Program — Biomedical Sciences; Educational Program — Behavioral Sciences, Practice Management and Health Care Systems, Ethics and Professionalism; Educational Program — Clinical Sciences; Faculty and Staff; Educational Support Services; Patient Care Services and Research Program.
"The self-study teams are off to a great start. Our broad-based, participatory approach has facilitated healthy conversation among faculty and staff a full two years in advance of our site visit," said Dr. Daniel Bender, assistant dean for Academic Affairs. "We are anxious to build upon the self-study process and make ongoing, sustained assessment and improvement part of the fabric of Pacific. It is a very exciting time."
The school's Accreditation Steering Committee is chaired by Dr. Nader Nadershahi, executive association dean and associate dean for Academic Affairs. This committee oversees a self-study steering committee, co-chaired by Drs. Nadershahi and Bender. The school community is invited to direct any questions about accreditation to Dr. Bender at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The list of writing group participants, along with a link to CODA standards, is listed on a new accreditation section now available on the school's web site at http://www.dental.pacific.edu/Accreditation.html.
The school successfully completed accreditation of its Oral Surgery program in 2010 and its Dental Hygiene program in 2012.
