The Northern California Section of the American College of Dentists (ACD) honored two members of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry community at the ACD’s annual awards banquet on May 11 in Berkeley, Calif. The annual event acknowledges Northern California dental professionals and educators, as well as dental students from the Dugoni School of Dentistry and University of California, San Francisco.

Class of 2013 student Ben Shimel received one of two Outstanding Student Leader awards, which recognizes him for his high levels of achievement in academia as well as superior leadership qualities. Shimel has held several student leader roles at the school including Associated Student Body president and class president during his second year of school. He has also been a leader and member of various school study clubs, committees, honor societies and organized dentistry groups.

Dr. Allen Wong received a Distinguished Faculty Member award in recognition of his outstanding service to the school and dedication to dental education. Wong is the director of the school’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry program; director of the school’s Union City Dental Care Center; and director of the school’s Hospital Dentistry Program. He is extremely active with community service activities and regularly participates in the school’s outreach events and international mission trips.

Shimel and Wong were nominated by Dugoni School of Dentistry leaders and were selected as award winners by a vote of school faculty members who are fellows of the ACD. In addition to the presentation of awards, the event also included invocation and remarks from Dr. Daniel Lewis, a Dugoni School graduate in the class of 1981.

Founded in 1920, the American College of Dentists is the oldest national honorary organization for dentists. The mission of ACD is to promote ethics, professionalism and service within the dental profession. Membership is by invitation only.
