Dugoni School of Dentistry Kicks off Active for Life Health and Wellness Program

September  06, 2011

Students, faculty and staff at the Dugoni School of Dentistry have committed themselves to living more active and healthier lives. About 100 dental school participants have signed up for Active for Life, a free program sponsored by the American Cancer Society, which encourages participants to set fitness and wellness goals. The Dugoni School last participated in Active for Life in 2009. This year, teams from all three University of the Pacific campuses have signed on for the activity.

The 10-week program asks participants to join a team comprised of colleagues with a common interest in achieving a healthier lifestyle. Teams work together to achieve or surpass their physical activity, healthy eating and weight loss goals. Participants set their own goals based on how active they are, and how active they want to be. Personal goals can be moderate (like walking or yard work or taking the stairs) or more intense (like running or tennis). Participants track their own progress online and receive points for healthy activities and eating habits each day.

Research shows that people who increase their physical activity, improve their diet, and maintain a healthy weight reduce their risk of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, according to the Active for Life web site.

This year the Dugoni School of Dentistry teams are further motivated by the friendly rivalry existing between the dental school and its Pacific counterparts in Stockton and Sacramento.

The program aligns well with school's already existent commitment to promoting health and wellness. A standing Health and Wellness committee comprised of faculty and staff promotes healthy eating, exercise and other wellness initiatives. Health-related activities include a weekly boot camp class, a weekly staff-organized walk around San Francisco's urban hills, a Wednesday farmers market, and a variety of lunchtime programs for the school community to take advantage of throughout the year.
