This spring the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry will celebrate World Oral Health Day, an annual event recognized globally which aims to raise awareness and encourage individuals, families, communities and governments to take action to reduce oral disease. This year’s event theme, “Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life,” focuses on protecting the teeth and mouths of the global population.
On Wednesday, April 10, the dental school will hold its own World Oral Health Day celebration with a lunch event for students, faculty and staff focused on international activities and partnerships, as well as local community outreach. Faculty and students who have traveled abroad for mission trips and education exchange programs will give short presentations to demonstrate ways the dental school is working to improve oral health outside of the United States. Attendees will learn about Fiji and Jamaica trips, upcoming student exchange trips to China, the IDS Bridge Builders event, and hear updates from school leaders involved in the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations, SCOPE outreach to the local community and more.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the April 10 session from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m in Room 103. A free lunch will be provided to attendees.
According to the World Oral Health Day website, oral diseases are among the most common chronic diseases. Worldwide, 90% of the population is at risk from some form of disorder, ranging from caries, periodontal diseases and tooth decay to oral cancer. Events like World Oral Health Day raise awareness and foster a sense of global collaboration to improve the state of oral health worldwide.
World Oral Health Day is spearheaded by FDI World Dental Federation. The event’s beginnings were conceived at the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai in 2007. Since then it has grown and is now celebrated in communities around the world. For more information visit the World Oral Health Day section of the FDI web site.
