April  23, 2012

Greg Gardner, Class of 2012, received the Delta Dental Student Leadership Award from Delta Dental of California during an April 19 awards luncheon at the company's San Francisco headquarters.  Gardner's contributions to the dental school through leadership and participation in organized dentistry prompted Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., to nominate him for the award.

The award is based on leadership skills as demonstrated by the student's activities and accomplishments during dental and pre-dental education; public service commitment; outstanding service or accomplishments in the field of dentistry or related science; and scholarship. Awards are given annually to a graduating student nominated from each of California's dental schools, with recipients each receiving $12,500.

As the immediate past president of the Associated Student Body (ASB), Gardner has represented Pacific at state and national meetings and has been instrumental in updating the Associated Student Body Strategic Plan.  He is a member of the ASB's Strategic Plan Oversight Committee and the Dental Faculty Council Exam and Ethics Workgroup. He helped initiate the One Word self-reflection program at the dental school and has helped plan many school-wide academic and social events.  Gardner has also been active in other extracurricular activities such as the Cariology Study Club, Project Homeless Connect and the Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program.

"I am very appreciative of Dean Ferrillo for the nomination, and extremely grateful to Delta Dental for their recognition and generosity," said Gardner. "It is humbling, and an honor to be recognized among the great students here at Pacific Dugoni.  I could not have been a leader without support from so many wonderful people."

Following graduation, Gardner will participate in the General Practice Residency Program at the University of Mississippi.  He is committed to becoming an expert general practitioner.
