The Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Stephanie Hannon, Class of 2009, as part of its annual dental student scholarship program. The award is presented to one student at each of the country's 54 dental schools to recognize outstanding leadership in the profession of dentistry and the community. Hannon plans to donate the scholarship money to a school service project to create custom mouthguards for Bay Area high school athletes.
"The message I hope to convey as a student at Pacific is that there are many ways to become involved in the community," said Hannon. "The mouthguard project combines dentistry with sports and is one way for fellow students to give back through service."
Hannon is a past president of the Dugoni School's Student Community Outreach for Public Education organization, or SCOPE. Under her direction, SCOPE sponsored more than 45 outreach activities during the 2007-2008 school year, providing free dental screenings and oral health instruction to adults and children throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. These efforts are a reflection of Hannon's commitment to improving the oral health of people who wouldn't otherwise receive care.
"Stephanie's leadership skills and dedication to community service are a great asset to the community and the dental profession," said Dr. Marc Geissberger, chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry. "Her generous contribution to the mouthguard project will benefit not only the student athletes who will receive the mouthguards, but our school as well."
Hannon is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa national honor societies. She has volunteered thousands of hours to provide oral health care services to underserved populations, including organizing a dental mission trip to Lima, Peru, earlier this year. Following graduation, Hannon plans to enter an orthodontic residency program.
