Dr. Cindy Lyon '86 Named Chair of the Department of Dental Practice

August  26, 2008

The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry appointed Dr. Cindy Lyon, associate professor, as chair of the department of dental practice effective August 25. Lyon will manage the educational curriculum; recruit, mentor and monitor faculty and staff members; maintain relations with Pacific's administration; represent the department in forming academic policy; and serve on a variety of committees, including the Dental Faculty Council and the Executive Admissions Committee.

"Dr. Lyon has a proven record of innovation, motivation, teaching excellence, encouragement of scholarship and contributions to the dental school and the university," said Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr. "I know that she will work hard to move the department forward in supporting the vision and mission of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry."

Throughout her career in dental education, Lyon has received numerous awards and held various leadership roles. She currently serves as a member of California Dental Association Foundation Board of Directors and is a liaison to the American Dental Education Association Commission on Change and Innovation.

Earlier this year, Omicron Kappa Upsilon honored Lyon with the Charles Craig Teaching Award, which recognizes educators who have implemented innovated teaching techniques in dental education. She is the recipient of the California Dental Association Distinguished Service Award, and is a fellow of both the ADEA Leadership Institute and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Lyon is a 1986 graduate of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. She and her husband, fellow alumnus Dr. John Muller, owned and operated a private general dentistry practice in Murphys, California, from 1986 to 1997. She returned to teach at the dental school in 2001 as a clinical periodontics instructor, and later that same year launched the school's dental hygiene program-the first three-year baccalaureate dental hygiene program in the nation.

In addition to her role at the dental school, Lyon is pursuing a doctorate in education from Pacific's Benerd School of Education. She and her husband live in Murphys, California.
