Two University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry dental clinics co-hosted Give Kids a Smile events on Saturday, Feb. 2, bringing free dental care to families in need. Sponsored by the American Dental Association, Give Kids a Smile events take place nationwide each February. The school has participated in or hosted Give Kids a Smile events for many years.

At Pacific's Dental Care Clinic in Stockton, volunteer dental professionals from the dental school, San Joaquin Dental Society and the local community came together to treat nearly 350 children. Dozens of student volunteers traveled to Stockton to participate in the event on behalf of the school's Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) Program.

As in years past, the Stockton Give Kids a Smile event was co-hosted by Pacific and the San Joaquin Dental Society. Thousands of dollars worth of free dental care - in the form of fillings, sealants, cleanings, and more - was donated. The event also featured entertainment, games and oral health education opportunities.

A Give Kids a Smile event was also held on Feb. 2 at the school's Union City Dental Care Center, in partnership with the Southern Alameda County Dental Society. The clinic and dental society have together been hosting Give Kids a Smile events for many years, and through the years have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of care. This year alone more than $35,000 worth of care was donated.

Volunteer faculty, residents and staff; SCOPE student volunteers and local dental professionals joined forces to treat and educate area children. Nearly 70 children received care including fillings, crowns, pulpotomies, extractions, sealants and more. Families also received oral hygiene instructions, free toothbrushes and entertainment.

"It's wonderful to see so many talented professionals come together to treat children who might otherwise not receive any dental care," said Dr. Allen Wong, director of the Union City Clinic. "Thank you to everyone who volunteered and made this Give Kids a Smile one of our best yet."
