Student volunteers at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry have had a busy fall semester. Those participating in SCOPE, which stands for Student Community Outreach for Public Education, have screened and treated hundreds of patients throughout Northern California in the past three months.

Recently SCOPE has shown up at a preschool oral health education and screening event in San Francisco; a senior citizen health fair in San Mateo; a Sikh community event in Yuba City; and a Dentistry from the Heart event in South San Francisco. Additional activities included a Project Homeless Connect event in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and monthly events at the Sonrisas Community Dental Center in Half Moon Bay. Each event targeted a different population group in need of dental health education and care.

"There are many people who don't know where to begin when it comes to good oral health," said Diane Anthony, SCOPE's public relations coordinator. "SCOPE's involvement with various community events allows us to reach people who otherwise would have no access to education and treatment."

Dentistry from the Heart, hosted by Dr. Kelvin C. Choi, parent of Class of 2011 student Alexandra Choi, saw patients come for complex dental treatment — such as cleanings, fillings, extractions and X-rays —at no cost to the patient. The day-long event brought in volunteer dentists, oral surgeons and hygienists, along with SCOPE students, to treat hundreds of patients who would not otherwise receive treatment.

Sonrisas events bring volunteer third-year students to a nonprofit dental clinic once a month. During each day-long event, students screen, educate and provide extensive treatment to dozens of patients who come for low-cost dental services. Involvement with Sonrisas has been consistent since July, and will continue into 2011.

Most recently, at the annual Sikh Parade in Yuba City, students braved rainy weather to provide screenings and education to hundreds of Sikh community members. (For more details about the Sikh Parade outreach, please watch the video posted below.)

The Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program is a student-run volunteer community service organization at the dental school. For more information, visit the SCOPE web page.
