In a spirit of giving back to San Francisco, student representatives from the city's two dental schools recently gathered in Golden Gate Park to participate in a park cleanup and beautification effort.  Students from University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry collaborated in the first joint community service effort of the academic year.

Nearly 20 students from the two schools met the morning of Saturday, Aug. 21 to help beautify an area of San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Park.  Together they worked to clear a large wooded area in the western side of the park that had become overgrown and weed-infested. In under three hours the group was able to complete more work than would normally be completed it three weeks.

Affiliated with the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), a Northern California community outreach coordinator is elected for each academic year to serve as an ambassador between the Dugoni School of Dentistry and the UCSF School of Dentistry. The goal of the coordinator is to bring the dental schools together through organized, community-oriented events such as the park beautification project.  This year's coordinator is Armin Vahidnia, a Class of 2012 student at Pacific.

"It was fun to work with students from UCSF on this project, especially because we haven't had many opportunities to get to know them until now," said Vahidinia. "Together we were able to help beautify San Francisco while exchanging information about our dental school experiences."

Vahidnia has a handful of collaborative community outreach events planned for the coming academic year. Students at both dental schools are excited about the opportunity to meet new people, while giving back to the city they live in.

ASDA is a national student-run organization whose mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry. More than 87% of all dental students nationwide join the association. At the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, 100% of DDS and IDS students are members of ASDA. For more information, visit
