A team of representatives from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry recently traveled to China to discuss trends in dental education and dentistry in the world's largest country.
Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr.; Gary Mitchell, president of the Pacific Dugoni Foundation; and Dr. Colin Wong, a graduate and former president of the Foundation and the school's Alumni Association, made the trip during the first week of January.
The tour included a visit with students and faculty at the School & Hospital of Stomatology at Wenzhou Medical College in Wenzhou. The team visited classrooms and dental clinic facilities, and participated in a discussion about opportunities in China's dental education system. The exchange in Wenzhou comes on the heels of an August 2009 visit by a contingent of representatives from the School & Hospital of Stomatology to the Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco.
Ferrillo, Mitchell and Wong also spent time at the Guanghua College of Stomatology at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. As part of the visit, Dean Ferrillo gave a presentation entitled "Challenges Facing Global Dental Education," and the group toured facilities and met with students and faculty.
Following the presentation, school leaders honored Dean Ferrillo by presenting him with a letter of appointment from Huang Daren, the president of Sun Yat-sen University, as a visiting professor to Guanghua College of Stomatology for a two-year period.
"By sharing best practices and learning from other educators, we can raise the standards of dental education globally and improve oral health for people around the world," said Dean Ferrillo, who currently serves as president of the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations.
