Nearly 80 students, faculty and notable guests from California's dental profession gathered at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco for the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) District 11 Annual Meeting. ASDA's District 11 encompasses all California dental schools, including programs at Loma Linda University, University of the Pacific, UCLA, UCSF, USC and Western University.
The event was held during the weekend of Oct. 15-17. Activities included presentations, guest lectures, tours, social gatherings and a popular vendor exhibit fair. Dan Hammer, Class of 2011 and ASDA District 11 trustee, spearheaded the event's coordination.
"I was happy to see so many enthusiastic students from dental schools throughout California come to the District meeting," said Hammer. "It was a great chance to exchange information and hear about each other's dental programs, while learning about some of the major trends and changes within the dental industry."
Invited guests from the California Dental Association (CDA) hosted breakout sessions focused on topics such as oral health access barriers and the state's newly passed legislation replacing the clinical licensure exam with portfolio licensure. Students also heard about leadership and communication skills development.
Speakers from the CDA included Dean Chalios, vice president for CDA Public Policy; Peter Dubois, executive director of CDA; Dr. Alan Felsenfeld, CDA House of Delegates speaker; Dr. Jared Fine, CDA Access to Care Workgroup and Workforce Taskforce member; and Dr. Brian Scott, chair of CDA Access to Care Workgroup.
Speakers from the Dugoni School of Dentistry included Dr. Bruce Peltier, professor of Psychology and Ethics; Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, dean emeritus; Dr. Cindy Lyon, chair of the department of Dental Practice; and Dr. Nader Nadershahi, acting dean of the Dugoni School of Dentistry.
At the close of Saturday's activities, a vendor exhibit fair was held as a way to educate students about products and companies in the marketplace. Students mingled with vendors and company representatives who came to share information, give demonstrations and pass out samples.
ASDA is a national student-run organization whose mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry.
