Students Give Back Through SCOPE Volunteer Events

A SCOPE volunteer explaining the importance of good oral health to children.

August  27, 2009

Student volunteers from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry's Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) have been busy this past month participating in community events throughout the Bay Area to educate the public about the importance of taking care of their mouths.

Volunteers recently participated in oral health outreach activities at the United in Health Community Health Fair in San Francisco and at Sojourner Truth Manor in Oakland. Upcoming events will be held at the Ronald McDonald House in San Francisco and the Senior Center Health & Wellness Fair in San Mateo.

"SCOPE is a great reminder for me as to why I'm in school to begin with — to treat the people, not just the teeth," said Joy Magtanong-Madrid, DDS student in the Class of 2011 and co-president of SCOPE. "In a community such as San Francisco, people need to know there are dental professionals that care for their well-being. As a dental community, it is our responsibility to actively get involved."

SCOPE is a student-run volunteer community service organization at the dental school whose mission is to develop dental professionals committed to improving the health of all people. The program, now celebrating more than a decade of service, is unique in its student-initiated and student-operated community service design. SCOPE organizers aim to get every student at the dental school to volunteer their time, with hopes of achieving a nearly 100 percent participation rate.

This year's student officers for SCOPE are Rachelle-Joy Magtanong-Madrid and Hector Leon, Co-Presidents; Patty Torres, Vice President; Nancy Ly and Carsen Bentley, Classroom Coordinators and Michelle Tran, Public Relations. The faculty advisor for SCOPE is Christine Miller, RDH, MHS, MA, Associate Professor and Director of Community Programs.

One of the nation's premier dental schools, University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has served the Bay Area community for 113 years. The School of Dentistry is committed to excellence in student-centered education, patient care and research. Its clinics, located in San Francisco, Union City and Stockton, offer quality, affordable dental services to children and adults throughout Northern California.
