Pacific faculty members partner with graduate dentists to provide comprehensive, low-cost dental care for adults and children (age 14 or older). Our dental team takes great pride in providing care to our patients who have special concerns in dentistry. We treat a variety of patients that may have dental fear, medical concerns, developmental delay or desire dental care in an educational environment.
Our faculty, dental staff, assistants, hygienists and residents have tremendous experience in helping patients create and maintain a healthy smile. Humanistic care is the focus of Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry as well as access to care for all patients, including the underserved.
All phases of dentistry, including aesthetic dentistry, implant dentistry, implant dentistry, periodontal care, restorative care, prosthetic care and hospital dentistry are designed to enhance the function and appearance of an individual.
Clinic Closure Frequently Asked Questions
Important closure information
AGD Closure Information phone line: (415) 929-6530
AGD Closure Information e-mail: AGDQandA@pacific.edu
When is the AGD Clinic closing?
The AGD Clinic will stop treating complex cases and will no longer have general dentistry residents in San Francisco after June 30, 2008.
Why is the clinic closing?
Increasing cost in clinic operations and decreased reimbursement rates from government programs have created an unsustainable operation for the school.
Are any other Pacific dental clinics closing?
No. All other clinics will continue to operate as usual.
Who can I call for a referral to a new dentist?
San Francisco Dental Society
Business Hours (M–F 8:30–4:30) (415) 928-7337
24-hour referral service (415) 421-1435
for referrals of all types in San Francisco
Denti-Cal (800) 423-0507
for Denti-Cal referrals
If you live outside of San Francisco, please look in the Yellow Pages for your local dental society.
Why can’t you refer me to a specific dentist or clinic?
Since some of the faculty members who work here have private practices outside of the school, it is considered a conflict of interest to make referrals to specific providers. Regarding other clinics, we do not have the ability to determine other dentists’ ability to accept you as a patient; therefore, we cannot recommend them.
I am in the middle of treatment. What is going to happen to me?
The resident will finish or attempt to finish your planned treatment. If you have extended treatment planned (like implants), then continuing care with a dental student will be discussed with you as one of your options. As we get closer to June, if your treatment does not look like it will be completed, then a transition plan will be created for you.
If you have received a closure letter from us, then once your treatment is complete, you will have 30 days to seek a new dentist. You may start searching for a dentist before your treatment is complete. It is very important that you establish a relationship with a new dentist as soon as possible in order to have uninterrupted care.
Can I be a patient of the Main (student) Clinic?
If you were once a patient of the Main Clinic and transferred to the AGD Clinic, the reason for your transfer was due to the complexity of your dental, medical, or psychological care. You are no longer eligible to be a patient of the Main Clinic as the dental students will not be able to manage/maintain your complex care needs. Please call your local dental society for referrals.
I have a developmental disability. What is going to happen to me?
Our hospital dentistry program will continue to see patients in the hospital. If you have already been screened for care in a hospital setting then you only need to wait for a phone call from our hospital coordinator to set up a surgery date.
If you do not have a hospital date or you have not been screened for care in a hospital setting, please call (415) 929-6675 after July for screening appointment availability.
I have no money. What do I do?
If finances are a challenge for you, prevention and planning are important. Anticipate your dental needs (periodic cleanings) and budget your limited resources for them. Develop good oral health habits including brushing and flossing multiple times a day to prevent cavities and gum disease. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and will save you money in the long run. Please call your local dental society for a dentist in your area.
If you have Denti-Cal, please call Denti-Cal at (800) 423-0507 for a referral.
What happens if I have a dental emergency before June 30?
If you have received a closure letter from us and you experience a dental emergency (defined as a combination of pain, swelling, and/or bleeding) within 30 days of the date of that letter, please call our Front Desk at (415) 929-6675 to make arrangements to be seen on an emergency basis by a resident.
If you have received a closure letter from us and it is past the 30-day emergency coverage period, you should visit your new dentist for your dental emergency or go to your local hospital emergency room. This is why it is important that you identify a new provider as soon as possible.
Can I get one last cleaning in the AGD Clinic?
Unfortunately, the residents and the hygienist are booked with appointments through June. We will not be able to accommodate any additional elective (non-emergency) dental treatment for our patients.
I am a CARE patient. Can I be seen in the CARE Clinic?
The CARE Clinic is staffed by only one dentist who is here part time. There are currently no openings for new patients in the CARE Clinic, and the CARE Clinic does not maintain a waiting list. Please call the Native American Health Center at (415) 621-8056 or HIV Health Services.
Can I get copies of my x-rays?
We may be able to send you copies of your most current x-rays, depending on the date of your last appointment. Charts and x-rays older than seven years are usually destroyed. If you want copies of your chart or x-rays, please fax/send a WRITTEN request to us. The written request must have your signature on it. Please allow 3-4 weeks as certain charts/x-rays are stored off site.
