Research Interests:
(1) Membrane surface charge
- Experiments: particle electrophoresis (zeta potentials); planar
bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) conductance probes
- Applications: DNA/phospholipid charge ratios of gene vectors;
adsorption of ions, peptides and proteins to phospholipid membranes
- Theory: adsorption isotherms for multiple-site binding
(2) Structure of polymer coats on membrane surfaces
- Experiments: microelectrophoretic measurement of liposome hydrodynamic
drag
- Applications: polymer-coated liposomes for intravenous drug-delivery;
gene vectors
- Theory: surface electrostatics and hydrodynamics; models of
frictional electro-osmotic flow in the surface polymer laye
(3) Osmotic pressures of polymer solutions
- Theory: application of polymer scaling theory to polymer osmotic pressures
