Welcome to the Institute of Dental History and Craniofacial Study
(IDHCS). The Institute maintains five
collections to support its mission of providing important resources
for the preservation and study of dental history, craniofacial
biology and evolution.
Researchers interested in
growth and development and comparative studies are encouraged to
examine the more than 1,500 human crania available in the S.R. Atkinson Library of Applied Anatomy
collection.
The P
& S Comparative Anatomy collection,
consisting of some 600 skulls of fish, amphibians, reptiles and
mammals, provides evidence of the astounding similarities and
differences in the anatomy and function of animal teeth.
If your interest lies in
Hawthorne tubes, you can spend an afternoon viewing hundreds of
glassplate X-rays, radiology journals or early X-ray equipment in the James A. Campbell Jr. Dental Radiology
collection.
Artifacts from the A.W. Ward Museum of Dentistry and the College of Physicians and Surgeons
Historical Society collections, respectively
documenting the history of general dentistry and that of the
"old school," can be viewed in special display cases in the
dental school and the California Pacific Medical Center Health
Sciences Library across the street.
The Institute consists of five
collections: the S.R. Atkinson Library of Applied Anatomy collection,
the P&S Comparative Anatomy collection, the James A. Campbell Jr.
Dental Radiology collection, the A.W. Ward Museum of Dentistry
collection and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Historical
Society collection. The Institute's mission is to provide a conducive
environment and important resources for the preservation and study of
dental history, craniofacial biology and evolution.
Access to the various
collections of the Institute is by special appointment
only.
The IDHCS is located in Room
612 of the dental school. Address all inquiries to: Institute of
Dental History and Craniofacial Study, University of the Pacific
School of Dentistry, 2155 Webster Street, San Francisco, CA 94115 or
call museum curator
at 415/929-6627.
The Institute is currently
supported by a small endowment and private contributions. Donations
are gratefully accepted.
Primarily used for research,
this world-renowned collection consists of more than 1,500 human
crania collected by orthodontist Spencer R. Atkinson from autopsies
and biological warehouses. The collection offers an extraordinarily
well-preserved age graded series of over 400 crania which span from in-utero to adult, representing the most complete collection of
juvenile crania in the United States. The SRA also houses a number of
pathological crania (hydrocephalics, microcephalics, cranial dysostoses, cleft palate and others). The Institute offers three
teaching slide sets featuring crania in this collection. Recent
improvements in the preservation and accessibility of the skull
collection have been made. Professionals and advanced students are
encouraged to request applications and submit research proposals to
study the collection.
Skulls of animals collected by
students in comparative odontology classes at P&S are featured in
this collection. These specimens serve as the basis for important
exhibits, research projects and educational programs on dental
anatomy, function, and evolution.
This unique collection
documenting the work of Dr. James A. Campbell, Jr. includes hundreds
of glassplate x-rays featuring unusual and routine cases, an
extensive library of radiology texts and journals, and early and
modern x-ray tubes and equipment.
Founded in 1974 in honor of
Abraham Wesley Ward, a pioneer of surgical periodontics and 1902
graduate of P&S, the museum collects, documents and preserves
historical and modern artifacts related to the dental profession. The
collection includes dental furniture, equipment, products, books,
photographs, films and documents from 1752 to the present. Period
dental offices are recreated using pieces from the collection, and
the museum maintains a 1860s dentist's office at the Columbia State
Historic Park in Columbia, California and a circa 1900 dental
operatory at the Woodside Store in Woodside, California.
IDHCS houses historical
documents and artifacts from the College of Physicians and Surgeons
(forerunner of Pacific) including a complete set of the CHIPS yearbook,
photographs, lecture notes, textbooks, grade cards and exams dating
from the late 1800s, as well as licenses earned by alumni. The
collection is designed to preserve a comprehensive history of
"P&S".
