Which of the new antifungals is best for yeast infections? Can antiviral drugs be used prophylactically for herpes infections? Is penicillin still the best drug for oral infections? A dentist makes an average of 5-10 drug prescribing decisions a week. This program will present a concise, informative and entertaining update on the drugs of choice and related techniques for the treatment of infections, as well as the control of pain and anxiety necessary in modern dentistry. (Half or Full Day) Understanding and "Prescribing" Over-the-Counter Dental Drugs and Products Does ibuprofen fight gum disease? Which mechanical toothbrush is most effective? Which desensitizing toothpaste works the best? Patients ask more questions about over-the-counter products than any other dental area and research shows they prefer brand name recommendations from their dentist or hygienist. This course will provide current information about mouth rinses, toothpaste, toothbrushes, anti-viral creams, "alternative" dental products, denture adhesives, chapped lip and sun protection creams, chewing gum and other over-the-counter products. (Half or Full Day) The Health History and Managing Medically Compromised Patients A proper Health history is a medical-legal requirement. What questions need to be asked? Is an interview required? The elements of a health history will be reviewed with a sample history and interview sheet provided. We all manage patients on medications or those with heart, kidney or psychiatric problems. Some patients have infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis or hepatitis. All these patients and many more require proper management for safe dental treatment. All will be discussed including correct prophylactic antibiotic use, including the latest expert opinion on prosthetic joint prophylaxis. |
