Doug Young, DDS

Contemporary Treatment of a New Infectious Disease: Dental Caries -- It's Not What We Were Taught in School!

In recent years, much has been learned about the balance between demineralization and remineralization of enamel and tooth roots including several ways in which fluoride acts to inhibit or reverse the caries process. New understanding of these mechanisms can be put to clinical use. Dr. Young will describe and illustrate the new thinking about fluoride and caries in the context of caries risk assessment and the prevention or reversal of caries. The balance between the bacterial challenge and the protection offered by saliva and fluoride together will be described. New restorative designs and techniques will also be discussed. Insurance and educational issues, as well as political implications of this new way of thinking will be explored. (Full or half day)
