Using
Other Email Clients to Access Groupwise E-mail Accounts
|
|
If you want to use your own, outside e-mail system, you can use the
directions below to configure your system to retrieve your Pacific Groupwise e-mail.
You can use software packages that meet the specifications of a "POP3
Client" to view and send email to and from your Pacific Groupwise email account.
All email client programs require the same basic information for
configuration, but the interface for each application, or even a different
version of the same application, will vary. A POP3 client will typically
need to know the following information:
- POP3 Server Name/Host Name: This is the DNS (Domain Name Server) name
or IP (Internet Protocol) address of the POP3 Server host machine. This is
the machine where the GroupWise Internet Agent is installed. The host name is pop.dental.pacific.edu
- User ID: This is the users' GroupWise User ID (user@pacific.edu). You
can add options to your User ID. There are several options you can use to
control how the POP3 Server handles your e-mail messages. For example you
can limit how many messages you want downloaded for each session (accessing
e-mail). For example: in order to get e-mail messages only from the past one
day:
User@pacific.edu t=1 (Note space between EDU and t)
- Password: This is the users' existing GroupWise password. It is not a
new password, a POP3 client-specific password, a NetWare password or any
network server password. The GroupWise password should have already been
defined. POP3 requires that you have a password defined in your GroupWise
system for any user that wants to use the POP3 Server.
- SMTP Server (outgoing mail): Some systems will ask for the server
address or name of the server to be used for outgoing mail. Typically this
is the mail server of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that you are
using. For instance, if your ISP is Mindspring, the outgoing server name
might be "mail.mindspring.com"
- Automatic Email Check Interval: This defines how often the email program checks the Groupwise mail server for new e-mail. Should be set to 10 miunutes or longer.
You should always refer to the product
documentation and help menu of individual email client for further
details on POP3 configuration. |
