Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry Dean Steps Down

July 20, 2015

Patrick J. Ferrillo Jr., dean of University of the Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry since 2006, today announced his intention to step down effective July 20.

"In his nine years at the helm of our dental school, Dean Ferrillo has overseen the school's move from its longtime home in Pacific Heights to a stunning new campus in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood," said university Provost Maria Pallavicini. "He has championed the school's mission of improving health by advancing oral health in countless other ways, and leaves Pacific well positioned to educate students for the way dentistry will be practiced in the 21st century. He has had a collaborative and innovative voice advocating for high-quality interdisciplinary academics both in the dental school and across the University."

"We have accomplished much during nine years. The real highlight for me has been to watch the people within the organization grow, and to add new outstanding people," Ferrillo said. "It is people who make an organization, not brick and mortar. I am grateful to all the dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends and patients who have been so committed to the vision, mission and values of the dental school."

During his tenure, Ferrillo oversaw extensive enhancements of the school's programs, resulting in the visionary Pacific Dental Helix Curriculum and the school's selection for the 2011 William J. Gies Award for "Outstanding Vision — Academic Dental Institution" from the American Dental Education Association's ADEAGies Foundation.

Ferrillo also played a key role in the school's historic move to its state-of-the-art new teaching and patient-care facility at 155 Fifth Street in San Francisco.

The project represented the largest real estate investment by the university since its 1924 move from San Jose to Stockton, and was recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the city's biggest real estate deals of 2014.

He also led a successful fundraising campaign that is moving closer to its goal of $40 million to support the new San Francisco facility.

Ferrillo's service to the university included acting as interim provost from July 2010 through January 2011, during the search that led to Pallavicini's appointment.

A longtime dental educator and leader in organized dentistry, Ferrillo joined Pacific as the eighth dean in the dental school's 119-year history.

He came to Pacific from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he served as vice provost for the Division of Health Sciences and dean of the School of Dental Medicine. He also served for many years at Southern Illinois University, where he rose from clinical assistant professor to dean of the dental school.

Ferrillo has been active in the American Dental Association and the Commission on Dental Accreditation/Council on Dental Education. His service has included posts aas president of the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations; president of the American Dental Education Association; chair of the ADEA President's Task Force on the Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health; chair of the ADEA Council of Deans; and chair of the board of Oral Health America.

He earned his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University and his DDS at Baylor College of Dentistry, where he pursued specialty training in endodontics. He is a fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

He plans to take a one-year sabbatical and then retire from the university.
