Pacific Dentists Exercising Towards Overall Xcellence (DETOX) has seen a growing number of participants at their educational events and exercise activities since they began in the Fall of 2014. The club was co-founded by Nisa Goshtasbi '16 and Navid Torabian '16 as a way to find a balance between the workload of dental school and personal health and wellness.
"Even though dental school may appear as the busiest, most chaotic time in our lives, I know that as we graduate and settle into our careers, our responsibilities will only grow," said Goshtasbi. "That's why I force myself to adopt a balance in my life, educationally, socially, and physically."
Pacific DETOX's popular Tuesday yoga class is held weekly at the dental school and is open to students, faculty and staff. The all-level class has had such an amazing turn-out the last couple of weeks with anywhere from 20-30 people each week that they now utilize a sign-up sheet to ensure that they have adequate space in accommodating as many people as possible.
Most recently, the club organized a hiking trip to Muir Woods, a national park famous for its tall redwood trees. More than 40 people showed up for the excursion, including Interim Dean Dr. Nader A. Nadershahi and his family. The group hiked over six miles, nibbling on healthy snacks provided by Pacific DETOX and enjoying their beautiful surroundings.
Pacific DETOX regularly holds fundraisers to support their club activities and philanthropic goals. They will be hosting a Berry Banana Smoothie Fundraiser on Monday, August 17 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm on the school's first floor. The proceeds will go towards purchasing yoga block and other materials, as well as a donation to a local non-profit organization - Headstand, whose mission is to empower at-risk K-12 students to combat toxic stress through mindfulness, yoga and character education.
