At a recent Board of Delta Dental of California luncheon, Steve Truman '16 was honored for his outstanding leadership and academic achievement, receiving a plaque and a check for $20,000 as the winner of the Delta Dental Student Leadership Award. The award is given to students who have demonstrated leadership skills in activities and accomplishments during dental and pre-dental education. Award winners are actively involved in civic and community service, excel in academics and have outstanding accomplishments in dentistry or related sciences. The winners are chosen from each California dental school by the school's dean.
Truman is at the top of his class and has been an active member in student leadership. He is president of Pacific's chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and has done an outstanding job at the local, state and national levels. He also serves as the ASDA District 11 Northern California Community Outreach Coordinator and had an article, "How gratitude can help build your network," published in the ASDA Journal. In addition, Truman is president of the Dugoni Practical Leadership Initiative and organized several events and leadership activity opportunities.
He has been active in several other extracurricular activities such as the Academy of General Dentistry, the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Student Ambassador Program, the Big Sibling Program, Dental Camp, CDA Cares (three events state-wide), the Special Olympics, Give Kids a Smile, the Simulation Course, and the Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program which provides education and care to underserved populations.
Truman is also a member of the Student Research Group and his presentations entitled, "Burning Mouth Syndrome" and "Concept Maps in Dental Education," conducted with an anatomical sciences faculty member, will be presented at the 2016 AADR meeting. He is a student member of ADEA, ASDA, the California Dental Association, and the San Francisco Dental Society.
