Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy Services
Transmission and scanning electron microscopy services are available to faculty and students at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, and to laboratories and individuals from outside the school. Transmission electron microscopy services include specimen preparation, ultramicrotomy, heavy metal staining and negative staining. Thin sections are viewed in the TEM, photographed on film and scanned to the computer.
Scanning electron microscopy allows one to look at surfaces of materials or soft tissues as small as cellular material or as large as a molar. Soft tissue samples are chemically fixed and dried to prevent the surface structure from collapsing. Pictures are made from digital images or stored in the computer.
All images can then be opened with image-editing software and either sent by email or printed.
