What You Need to Know to Successfully Treat this Growing Population

This three-hour course will provide a health-centered approach to treating the medically complex, geriatric population in a dental setting. The initial section of the lecture will cover the epidemiology and demographics of the geriatric dentistry patient population. Pre-treatment medical assessment and interprofessional communication strategies will be discussed, in addition to caries risk assessment, periodontal assessment and occlusal disease evaluation. Treatment strategies for these complex patients will be presented and several patient cases will be given as examples. This is the first time this course will be presented in the San Francisco Bay Area.

You Will Learn

  • To identify the demographics of the geriatric population in the United States
  • To analyze common medical conditions and pharmacology associated with the geriatric populations
  • To review the Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) protocols for patients
  • To synthesize information from case presentations relating to restorative dentistry, oral surgery and removable and implant prosthodontics for geriatric patients
