June 16, 2015

Two long-time faculty members were recently honored for their dedication, impact on student success and teaching excellence at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

The awards were presented at the school's Faculty Development Day held on June 9, 2015.

Podesto Award

Ms. Chris Miller, associate professor and director of community programs in the Department of Dental Practice, received the University-wide Podesto Award.

The Podesto Award is one of the Faith Davies Leadership Awards granted annually by University of the Pacific's office of Student Life. The award recognizes outstanding educators who directly touch and enrich the lives of Pacific students.

Ms. Chris Miller is the faculty advisor for the school's Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE), a student-run volunteer community service organization at the school. For more than 20 years, peer-mentorship has driven the leadership development of SCOPE officers and sustained projects in the community. SCOPE student volunteers take active roles in prevention education, health screenings and presentations for families, parents, children, senior citizens and other underserved members throughout the Bay Area community.

Ms. Miller was one of the lead faculty founders and advisors involved in dental services provided at Project Homeless Connect, a city-sponsored outreach program held quarterly in San Francisco. PHC is one of the 50 community-campus partnerships Ms. Miller and students are involved with to support student learning and care for the community. She is also involved in many special initiatives such as the San Francisco Children's Oral Health Collaborative.

In addition to his commitment as an educator, he has maintained a faculty dental practice at the school since 1982.

Dr. LaBarre brings unique interests, strengths and clinical experience to his teaching. He embodies the school's humanistic commitment by modeling the profession's highest standards, setting high expectations for his students, and connecting deeply with patients and the community.

In addition to his many curricular contributions at the school, Dr. LaBarre has generously shared his time, expertise and service to seek and facilitate grant funded teaching and learning opportunities and patient care with numerous community partners.

He was awarded the Pacific Dugoni Alumni Association's Medallion of Distinction in 2008 for his service to the school and the advancement of the dental profession. Most recently, he was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award from the American College of Dentists' Northern California Section.
