The Northern California Section of the American College of Dentists (ACD) recognized outstanding dental students, educators and professionals during a dinner held at The Olympic Club's Lakeside Clubhouse on Sunday, June 3. University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry honored their selections for the Outstanding Student Leader Award and Distinguished Faculty Award. The ACD award recipients for each school were selected by a vote of faculty members who are fellows of the ACD.
Kevin Kai, DDS Class of 2018, won the Dugoni School's Outstanding Student Leader Award, which recognized his academic achievement and leadership excellence. The Distinguished Faculty Award for the Dugoni School was given to Sigmund Abelson, DDS, MACM, associate dean of clinical affairs and chairman of the Department of Clinical Oral Healthcare. In addition, Rolande Tellier, MBA, PMP, senior program manager for the Pacific Center for Special Care, received the Dr. Joseph Krejewski Award of Merit, an award recognizing a non-member who has shown tremendous support for the profession.
Many Dugoni School faculty members, administrators and alumni who are Fellows of the ACD were also part of the evening's celebration, including alumnus Dr. Gary Yonemoto '75, the Regent for ACD's District 7.
Founded in 1920, the ACD is the oldest major honorary organization for dentists with a mission to advance excellence, ethics, professionalism and leadership in dentistry. ACD members have exemplified excellence through outstanding leadership and exceptional contributions to dentistry and society. Membership is by invitation only and currently includes more than 7,400 active and retired Fellows. Approximately 3.5 percent of dentists are Fellows of the ACD.
