First Scholar Graduates from International General Dentist Educator Program at University of the Pacific

June 3, 2015

This spring Dr. Fawaz Alzoubi became the first global scholar to graduate from the University of the Pacific's International General Dentist Educator (IGDE) program.

The IGDE program was launched in 2010 through a collaboration between University of the Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and Gladys Benerd School of Education. Designed for international scholars looking to further their dental education and eventually become dental educators, the program brings students from abroad to Pacific for five years of advanced training and graduate work.

Clinical education is provided under a two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program leading to a clinical certificate upon completion of both years one and two. Didactic education is provided under the two-year graduate program leading to a Master's in Education. The final year of the program consists of completing a thesis project if not completed in the previous year, and teaching practicum in didactic, pre-clinical, and clinical education.

In 2012 Alzoubi earned his certificate of completion from Pacific Dugoni's AEGD program and in 2013 was named a diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry. In 2013 he received his Master of Arts in Education and Leadership through the Gladys Benerd School of Education. He continued his academic pursuits and in 2015 earned his Doctorate of Education (EdD) in Professional Education and Leadership.

While at Pacific he also pursued advanced training in implant dentistry. He recently became a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Diplomate of the American Board of Implantology/Implant Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He also conducted clinical, basic science and educational research, and got involved in teaching as an instructor and faculty at both pre- and post-doctoral levels.

Leaders from the dental school recently held a special dinner in his honor to celebrate the achievement. As a graduate of the IGDE program, Alzoubi is now academically qualified to teach and practice at Kuwait University, where he plans return to begin his career.

"What I have accomplished here at Pacific during my five-year program is a reflection of the kind of education and training I received at this wonderful institution," said Alzoubi. "Pacific is an amazing place to be in, and I truly cherish the time I spent here. It's been a wonderful journey that I enjoyed very much. I look forward to starting an extension of the Pacific family as an international scholar."

The IGDE program's roots stems from the Pacific Dugoni's vision to develop international relationships, advance the future of dental education and improve global oral health.

The school has received interest from dental institutions around the world that are interested in sending professionals to Pacific for this unique program to train dental educators.

Pacific Dugoni is accepting applications from prospective IGDE students for upcoming classes. The application deadline is January 1 of each year.
