Scientific Research in Spotlight at AADR San Francisco Section Event

University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry hosted its annual American Association for Dental Research (AADR) San Francisco Section event on Wednesday, April 19 at to showcase the research work of students, residents, faculty and staff from the Dugoni School and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry.

Oral presentations were followed by a viewing of 20 submitted posters and a reception, capped off with a presentation of awards for the best posters. About 60 people attended from the local research community.  

Following Dean Nader Nadershahi's opening remarks, David Ojcius gave a presentation on "Sensing of Infection by an Inflammasone During Infection of Gingival Epithelial Cells" and Sarah Wong of UCSF presented "Mechanism of Endochondrial Healing: Transformation of Cartilage to Bone".

Dugoni School student winners of the best research project were:

  • Kamille Mercado: The Role of Neurotrophic Factors in Dental Pulp Stem Cells
  • Ria Suri and Robin Lambert: A New Insertion Landmark and Modification of the Standard Technique for Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block Injection.
  • Ruidan Ma: VoiceThread Promotes Student-centered Learning by Improving Student Discussion

UCSF student winners for the best research project were:

  • Bronwyn Hagen: The Role of Apoptosis in Mouse Secondary Palate Fusion
  • Thomas Nguyen: Amelogenesis Imperfecta Mutations Affect Self-Assembly of Amelogenin Peptides Into Nano Ribbons
  • Nai-Yuan Nicholas: Influence of Multi-wavelength Laser Irradiation of Enamel and Dentin Surfaces: Surface Morphology and Acid Resistance 

The AADR is a non-profit organization with more than 3,700 members in the United States. Its mission is to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health; support and represent the oral health research community; and facilitate the communication and application of research findings. The AADR is the largest Division of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).
