What is it?

An entertaining way to help students absorb important course material about using anesthesia with patients.

What problem does it aim to solve?

Anesthesia is an important procedure that is unforgiving of errors. It’s extremely important to make sure that dental students understand all the steps thoroughly. However, traditional means of teaching this material such as lectures can be insufficiently engaging, and limited audiovisual aids are available.

How does it work?

Dental students made a parody music video using the song “Good As Hell” by Lizzo. They rewrote the lyrics to explain the steps of anesthesia preparation and delivery, while the video humorously but accurately showed a live demonstration. The video was hosted on the school’s Mediasite server and shared to the Canvas instructional content management system. Students were encouraged to watch the video before participating in the hands-on rotation part of their course, and afterwards their hands-on performance was assessed. Researchers also analyzed viewership of the video.

What are the findings?

The results: The video analytics, including heat maps, showed full attention to the video by viewers. Students performed very well on armamentarium assembly, with a 100% success rate.

Engaging video material that incorporates familiar music combined with lyric captions and pedagogic content may help boost learning and information retention; so might engaging students in the process of creating the educational materials.

What are the next steps?

Faculty need support and training resources in order to learn and make optimum use of learning technologies; evaluation of injection preparation and delivery needs further analysis to see if there is a clear benefit shown with this course method here as well.
