Pandemic or not, the annual Rotary Read-In will go on.

That’s the word from Jim Dugoni ’86, co-chair of the annual Stockton literacy event.

“This is our 30th year, so we wanted to make sure it happens even with the COVID-19 situation,” said Dugoni, development officer with University of the Pacific’s Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. “We had to pivot to a different format, but we think it will work out very well.”

Pacific has a long history of involvement in the Rotary Read-In. Last year, more than 50 employees and students took part.

“It is wonderful that so many from the university read each year. It is a Pacific tradition,” said Dugoni, who co-chairs the Read-In with Tiffany Manning. They are both members of the Rotary Club of North Stockton.

Here are the new plans for this year’s Read-In, according to Dugoni:

Due to COVID-19, this year’s 30th Annual Rotary Read-In event is pivoting to a virtual event in 2021 and will be held during the week of February 22–26.

Since we cannot go into the schools and read to K–3 students in-person this year, we are asking for volunteers to record a video of themselves reading an age-appropriate book and upload it onto our YouTube channel at “Virtual Stockton Rotary Read-In.” Download helpful instructions for self-producing your video.

Teachers and families will be able to access these videos at any time during Virtual Stockton Rotary Read-In Week and throughout the remainder of the school year.

If you have any questions about making your video, please contact us at iwanttoread@rotaryri.org.

Regarding purchasing books and donating them to the classrooms this year, we will send out announcements in January about where you can drop off books, which our committee will then distribute to classrooms in coordination with the San Joaquin County Office of Education and our local school districts. Check out our suggested book list.

Please share this information to others who might be interested in participating in this year’s Virtual Stockton Rotary Read-In.
